1. Set-up a REAL “Office Space”
Like with any other area of the house, you should have a designated area of the house that should only be for work. It could just be a desk with an office chair (invest in a decent chair or even a standing desk) but having a space just for work in a quieter part of where you’re living will help focus and keep you productive.
2. Use Technology in Your Favor, NOT Against You.
I know many of you are probably clicking away from your social media platform of choice. This is the enemy of the home office. Stop kidding yourself, you’re not multitasking. You can always use apps to organize your time, whether it’s a basic calendar or alarm, it could save your skin from those deadlines.
3. Social Media Can Be a Friend
Before you start even thinking about working from home, you need to make sure that you are prepared to have a bulletproof system for communication. Without the traditional office setup, less time is wasted in office gossip. You’re not wasting 30 to 40 minutes to get up, walk to the other side of the office, talk with 2 or 3 people, and then return to work. Apps like Slack only prove that the old saying ‘That meeting should’ve been an email’ truer than ever.
4. Take Your Rest Time Seriously
We all work hard, we shouldn’t punish ourselves for playing hard. Time away from your screen is just as important as time online. Make sure you set up ample time to relax, refresh, and rest yourself. You are doing yourself a disservice if you aren’t giving your full. If you’re exhausted, you’re not working at your best.
5. Create a Routine and Stick to It
With all of the above in mind, you can apply this to make a routine that keeps you active, full of energy, and most importantly, productive.
With the ever-changing way in which we approach our work, many of us are seeing the benefits of now being able to have our office pretty much anywhere with a decent internet connection. One of these places many of us find ourselves are our homes. However, not all of us are aware of how easily distracted one can be without proper supervision. In the end, we want to be the most productive we can be from the comfort of our home.
Here are 5 things you should do if you’re planning to start working from home;
After following these steps, I hope you feel closer to making the leap into online work and having more control over your life in general.
